Age Concern New Zealand is committed to making our website accessible to everyone — including older people, disabled people, and those using assistive technologies.
Our standard
We aim to align with the NZ Government Web Accessibility Standard 1.2, which came into effect in March 2025. This standard is based on the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA — the internationally recognised benchmark for accessible web content.
While Age Concern New Zealand is not a government agency and is not legally required to meet this standard, we choose to align with it because we believe everyone has the right to access information and services online.
Legal context
New Zealand’s Human Rights Act 1993 prohibits discrimination on the grounds of disability. This applies to online services as well as in-person ones. We take this seriously and are committed to removing barriers to digital access.
New Zealand has also ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD), which recognises the right of disabled people to access information and communications on an equal basis with others.
What we’ve done
- Pages use a clear heading structure to support screen reader navigation
- Images include descriptive alt text
- Colour contrast meets WCAG 2.2 AA requirements
- The site can be navigated using a keyboard alone
- Text can be resized without loss of content or function
- Links are written to make sense out of context
- Forms include visible labels
Known issues
Some older documents on this site, including PDFs, may not fully meet accessibility requirements. We are working to address these progressively.
If you need content from a document that is not accessible to you, please contact us and we will do our best to provide it in another format.
Assistive technology
This site is designed to work with:
- Screen readers including NVDA, JAWS, and VoiceOver
- Keyboard-only navigation
- Browser zoom and text resizing
- Voice recognition software such as Dragon NaturallySpeaking
- High contrast display modes
